22 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | AUGUST 2018 A hidden braid softens up a punk-heavy beauty look at Libertine. —KLF L ibertine designer Johnson Hartig decided to reclaim his roots as a trendsetting force this season; after all, he was the fi rst to make skull prints trés chic in the high-fashion realm and has been endlessly copied ever since. And, as is his wont, the beauty look remains as "Libertine cool" as ever, without much deviation from season to season. It's dark. It's smoky. It's glitzy. It's deconstructed. It's punk. Yet the anarchist element that often permeates the Libertine beauty receives a softening this go- around—at least for the hair, as evo (@evohair) hair lead Kenna explains backstage. "Even though we're doing 85 percent of the hair look we did last season, we added in a braid for some of the girls," he says. "But it's sort of hidden; we're deconstructing it so that you can't really tell it's there. Johnson hates braids; he feels they're too romantic, so this [braid] has to have a rough feel to it." That roughness is built into the hair thanks to evo Salty Dog Beach Cocktail Spray, which he rough-dries through the lengths, and Builders Paradise Working Spray, which he mists over the plaits as he's pulling out bits and pieces of hair. "We're also roughening up the texture with grit from Shebang-a-Bang Dry Spray Wax," he says, noting that the "thrashed" texture of the hair helps to camoufl age the plait. For such a hidden element, this punked-up braid certainly receives a ton of attention—in the best possible way.
