42 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JANUARY 2018 Live & Learn/ Milestones Keune celebrates 95 years of groundbreaking products and styles . —FM P enicillin, fl apper dresses and the jitterbug were just a few fab inventions born of the Roaring Twenties—a vibrant decade that also witnessed several exciting hair advancements. A German inventor introduced the fi rst handheld blowdryer in 1920; prior to that, desperate dames had been inserting pipes into the exhaust valves of their vacuum cleaners. And in the Netherlands in 1922, Dutch chemist Jan Keune developed an innovative formula for creating a liquid perm. Thus was born a company called Keune (@keunehaircosmetics), the fi rst European manufacturer of the revolutionary product that preceded modern perms. This January, Keune proudly celebrates its 95th anniversary. And while much has changed, essential key elements remain the same. The brand is still based in Soest, a picturesque town in the central Netherlands, and remains independent and family owned. After 65 storied years, Jan's son George Keune Sr. still shows up for work each day, along with his two sons, who are likewise known for their dedication to every facet of the ever-evolving business. And while all products continue to be developed and manufactured in nearby labs, today those local, ultra-modern complexes boast offi ces, a studio and a sprawling factory. Because no birthday is complete without a gift, Keune commissioned Amsterdam-based fashion illustrator Sjoukje Bierma to create 10 original images of decade-defi ning tress styles. Stunners include '40s-style victory rolls, '80s punk rock crimps, and of course, an homage to the fringy and beloved '90s "Rachel" 'do. Check out the most popular products from each decade. BASH Birthday Keune Design Society Hairspray Extra Forte is my go-to fi nisher when working New York Fashion Week, as well as in the salon," says Shannon King, Keune design lead and owner of Hair + Co BKLYN salons in Brooklyn, NY. "When using this product, spray about 12 inches from your style, so you apply it evenly and sparingly. Curly girls can lightly mist onto texture for added support, hold and shine."
