18 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JANUARY 2018 Trendsetters/ Runway Report W hile not all of us can relate to the "permanent hotel dweller," we are nonetheless fascinated by the concept. Designer Georgine Ratelband wishes to dip into these "glamorous creatures'" lifestyles: Coco Chanel at the Ritz and Edie Sedgwick at the Chelsea Hotel were among her fashion muses this season. Naturally, a hotel hopper has a certain beauty about her, and Moroccanoil artistic director Kevin Hughes dares to capture this elusive glamour in just one hairstyle for the Georgine show (@moroccanoil). "Since the inspiration is how celebrities used to live in hotel suites, we thought, 'What would the Georgine girl's suite look like if we were peering through the keyhole?'" he says. The answer (at least, for the girl lounging in the suite): hand-cut, inky black wigs that have been curled and tousled to sexy imperfection. For the hair underneath the onyx bobs, Hughes creates a wig wrap with two French braids, explaining that the silhouette will be tight yet will still maintain some bulk at the bottom. As for those wigs, Hughes notes that because he's using synthetic wigs with unrealistic twirled texture, each had to be steamed to remove any tight kinks. Then he went back in and reintroduced relaxed curls by wrapping each section in opposite directions around a 1½-inch barrel curling iron (set at 250 degrees so that he doesn't melt the synthetic hairs), keeping the ends free. For an extra dose of rough texture, he mists on Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray from roots to tips, scrunching the hair with his hands. If a little more hotel romp-worthy separation is desired, Hughes spot-applies Moroccanoil Texture Clay here and there. And though the "suite" life seems a fanciful one indeed, Hughes is all about realism when it comes to the grand fi nish. To tamp down the plastic sheen of any synthetic wig, he suggests dry shampoo. "We used Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo Dark Tones to matte down the top," he points out. "It makes the hair look and feel more real." GROOM SERVICE High-rolling patrons of the "suite" life serve as muses for the mussed bob at Georgine. —KLF Hero Product Kevin Hughes uses Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray to tone down the synthetic shine of wigs while building texture.
