42 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | NOVEMBER 2017 A t the age of 12, Stacie Bowie knew that she wanted to be a hairdresser. After fi nishing beauty school years later, she studied in London, Paris and South Africa— also working as a color educator for Redken. "I love to learn and consider myself a 'forever student,'" says Bowie. "17 years into my career, with the encouragement of my husband Scott, I made the decision to open a salon. It was time for me to take what I had learned and create a salon that worked as a team and strived to be the best." In 2005, Bowie Salon and Spa opened its doors to the public in Seattle. The "modern Zen minimalist" space was inspired by Bowie's belief in Buddhist philosophy. "The salon is a big space with white walls reminiscent of a photo studio," she remarks. Live & Learn/ Salon of the Month "People comment that we should have artwork on the walls. We kept the walls bare for a couple of reasons: One is to keep the minimalist uncluttered feel, but also because we wanted to maintain our focus on the client rather than the stylist or salon decor." With a staff of 10 stylists and six apprentices, the salon offers haircuts and color services, as well as an array of spa treatments such as facials, makeup and waxing. Bowie chose a commission/employee- based salon model because it afforded her the best chance to hire like-minded people who share her vision and values. She also offers an advanced hairstylist apprentice program that is recognized as one of the best in the nation.
