46 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | OCTOBER 2017 Live & Learn/ Milestones COURTESY OF MANIC PANIC The rock 'n' roll sisters behind Manic Panic celebrate four decades of rainbow-colored success. —ALISHA RACKER T ish and Snooky Bellomo's love for rock began at an early age, eventually landing them as singers in Blondie's original lineup. On July 7, 1977, the sisters channeled their creative ambition into a retail store and opened the fi rst punk-style boutique in New York City—and Manic Panic (@manicpanicnyc) was born. The shop became famous for their original designs, which included hair colors and cosmetics in every shade imaginable. The popularity of Manic Panic soared in the late '80s, and the sisters began wholesaling their cruelty-free line of products right out of their little shop. Because music is Tish and Snooky's fi rst love, Manic Panic created products that refl ected their culture with names like After Midnight, Hell's Bells, Purple Haze and Rockabilly Blue. By the '90s, Manic Panic had grown into an international brand and was adorned by fashion models and celebrities alike. The brand's long list of loyal devotees includes Alice Cooper, Cyndi Lauper, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Steven Tyler, to name a few. The millennium brought international distribution, a cult following and partnerships with hip salons in both California and New York. Manic Panic's 40th anniversary was celebrated in obvious style. In May, Snooky kicked off the festivities by hosting a pre-press party at her apartment in New York's historic National Arts Club. "We are so grateful to everyone who has helped and encouraged us throughout the past four decades," she says. Then on July 7, Manic Panic threw a full-blown anniversary bash at New York City's Cutting Room, where friends and distributors from all over the world came together to celebrate. "The time goes by in a fl ash," proclaims Tish. "We still feel like we're in our twenties, and we'll rock till we drop!" The Bellomo sisters continue to perform with rock groups at night while running their global brand by day. The future of Manic Panic is as bright as their range of hair colors. Notably, their most recent launches include a professional line for stylists. As successful female entrepreneurs, Tish and Snooky are true pioneers of the industry who have proven that individuality and hard work most certainly pay off.
