44 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | OCTOBER 2017 Live & Learn/ Head of the Class ProRituals' Douglas Martucci sets a new educational standard. —FRANCESCA MOISIN I t's all in the family," shares Douglas Martucci, creative director and director of education for ProRituals (@prorituals). "As a kid, I grew up watching my stylist mom cut and color hair." Though he initially trained as a classic ballet dancer, during his senior year of high school the young artist simultaneously pursued courses at Jon Louis School of Beauty in Patchogue, New York. "At that academy, I realized I loved hair and felt more passion for tresses than any performance I'd previously given," Martucci recalls. Post-graduation, he responded to an online posting and scored his fi rst assistant gig at Manhattan's famed John Sahag Workshop. "Being exposed to that level of artistry on a daily basis changed my life," he says. These days, he's back where he's most comfortable: working for a close-knit, family-run company. He joined ProRituals in 2008, helping the brand transition from Jingles, then took a two-year hiatus to test the waters at a large corporation, but that setting didn't suit him. "Too many meetings about meetings, with nothing getting accomplished," Martucci points out. "I prefer small groups that don't have to report to shareholders because they have more freedom to serve hairdressers." Martucci is required to wear multiple hats, but he revels in that challenge. From creating fresh formulas with lab chemists to doing quality control at factories to crafting content for new classes with his team of instructors, no two days are alike. Since last July, he's also strived to change the brand's approach to education. In one word, practicality is the tenet that sets the ProRituals program apart from others of its kind. "We focus on real problems, then provide concrete solutions," Martucci explains. "Inspirational workshops are wonderful, but those takeaways are not always immediately useful." Instead, he emphasizes salon-reality techniques meant to increase productivity and boost profi tability. "As an industry, we must work to make the overall process easier and more effi cient for both stylists and salon guests," he muses. Leave it to Teacher Need to Know On November 1, ProRituals will relaunch its website with new information on the full range of educational off erings. Classes are held with brand distributors around the country. For more info or to fi nd a local distributor, visit prorituals.com. The newest brand collection, dubbed Project M, just made its debut. It boasts client- friendly looks that shift from bold and bright to subtle and demure. Cuts focus on traditional technique with a dash of edge. Think disconnected shags plus laser- line bobs with interior shatters. Martucci is known for his high-spirited, fun and engaging approach to styling. COURTESY OF PRORITUALS Ongoing education is about refi ning the eye and re-honing skill sets. Maybe neon pink isn't your forte, but the process of getting there could help reveal a hidden talent." —Douglas Martucci, creative director and director of education for ProRituals Douglas Martucci
