MATTE PRODUCTIONS 28 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | OCTOBER 2017 Trendsetters/ Runway Report B ackstage at The Blonds, molded tendrils slither along models' foreheads, licking at their temples. Lead makeup artist Kabuki points to femme fatales as the beauty inspiration—in particular, the art deco women in the paintings of Tamara de Lempicka, as well as actress Catherine Deneuve in the 1983 vampire fl ick The Hunger. It's not surprising that femme fatales are a source of inspiration; The Blonds often outfi t female performers (Jennifer Lopez and Madonna, for example) who epitomize strong, sexy women hell-bent on world dominance. But wearing hair "snakes" on their heads? That feels wicked and weird, but Oribe (@oribe) hair lead Kien Hoang consistently delivers "strange" in beautiful ways, and this hairstyle is no different. Hoang says he created the serpentine design based off of the python prints that star in the collection. But it's not all snakes; a twisted detail grounds the look—slightly. "We're fi rst creating an asymmetric chignon and rolling it to the side. It really has a cinematic feel—and The Blonds always have cinematic references," Hoang says, citing the design er duo's interest in the fi lm The Mummy, which made its big screen debut this June. Designers Phillipe and David Blond were fi rm with Hoang on the reptilian hair: "They wanted these winding waves, not pin curls like you'd see with this type of chignon," he says. To craft the snake-like waves that twist and wind all over the head, Hoang saturates hair in Oribe Rock Hard Gel, saying, "As the gel hardens you'll really see the snakes." Various Oribe team members keep their fi ngers depressed on the nozzles of Oribe Superfi ne Strong Hair Spray, their streams hitting the snaking shapes to keep them from slithering about too much. Enthuses Hoang, "We're having each team member make the waves and snakes how they want, so it will be unique to each girl." Serpentine beauty of all types? Mission accomplished! Serpentine swirls slither and shimmer at The Blonds. —KLF on a Mane Hero Product Entire tubes of Oribe Rock Hard Gel lend tendrils their snake- like shape. harmers Various Oribe team members shape their own Medusas—each unique to the stylists' whims. akes
