CREATE THE OUTLINE shape and length using the fl at side of the razor in a horizontal fashion. The angle you hold the razor at will act like your fi nger angle and can create a square, inverted or A-line perimeter. SECTION THE HAIR one inch above the ears on both sides into the occipital area. Elevate this section straight up around the head shape and cut uneven shape into the ends using the razor end and your thumb in a ribboning technique. If your perimeter is angled in any way, follow that same design as you ribbon the hair. GO TO THE TOP and center part the hair into the crown. Section one-inch on either side of that part and comb together to cut last. The hair below that section is held out vertically, and using a weaving technique with the razor at a 45-degree angle (pointing away from the head), weave the razor in and out of each section about two inches in and remove the weight. DROP THE REMAINING hair down and without elevation, point cut into the hair creating V shapes into the ends. If your client wants fringe, isolate that area prior to cutting and design the shape at the end of the cut. Twist small sections and cut horizontally across those pieces to create a more unfi nished feel and edge. STYLE using your products of choice and rough up tresses to air-dry or diffuse the hair into shape. SECTION HAIR from the highest point of the head to behind the ear on both sides and clip the front out of the way. IN THE BACK, section off hair from the occipital bone on a slight diagonal to just below the ears. TILT THE HEAD slightly forward, using the small teeth of the comb to create tension in the hair, and fl atten hair down onto the neck, using your shears as an aid to stick the hair to the skin. Then cut a slight curved line. This now becomes your guide. CONTINUE TO TAKE ½-inch to 1-inch sections up the back of the head, refl ecting the initial shape. Cutting at your guide, use your comb for minimal tension. MOVING TO THE SIDE, from middle back part to front hairline, continue slightly inverted partings. Have enough of a back guide to see your angle to the front. Remember: Where there is less hair it will spring up more, so keep this in mind when sectioning. TO COMPENSATE FOR THE EAR, take a parting at the front and comb around the ear. Cut using the guide from the back, just below the jawline. Comb that hair in front of the ear, and without snipping the ear cover, continue cutting your line—this only needs to be done on the fi rst and second sections. Be careful not to cut it off. Leave out a small section over the ear for cover, taking up enough of your guide, and continue up the head. All cleanup will be done dry. After fi nishing, you can even take a trimmer or a clipper and perfect the line. BLUNT Bobs For the extra daring, the bold bob is edgy and youthful. Chopping off one's locks can be a liberating experience, and what better style to opt for than a bob? As seen on the models at Céline and Tory Burch, lengths brushed the earlobes for a look that is both sophisticated and playful. "If your client isn't ready to take the plunge to a pixie, a blunt bob is a great choice!" says Shereen Hussein, national trainer for Eufora. "Curled, straight or wavy, this cut can look phenomenal on everyone. Plus, a blunt cut makes your client's hair look healthier, stronger and thicker." For fi ner hair types, she recommends adding in a thickening serum and volumizer. For thick or coarse hair, use a smoothing balm or serum to tame frizz and lend structure. And for clients with curly texture, she recommends a curl cream or a leave-in hydrating product that will lend shine and weight so hair doesn't get wide or triangular. Here, Hussein explains how to achieve an eff ortless bob using a pair of shears.
