LEFT: ANDREEA ANGELESCU; COURTESY OF SEBASTIAN PROFESSIONAL (2) 32 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | SEPTEMBER 2017 Trendsetters/ Runway Report D isappearing into the valley—that's all it took for designer Christian Siriano to unearth the inspiration he needed during a time troubled by political chaos. While on a trip to the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada, Siriano became dumbstruck by nature's complete mastery of beauty—in particular, the park's unique beehive sand formations that boast mesmerizing grooved patterns and powerful shapes. Drawing from the designer's inspiration of how elements of nature work to form and shape rocks into grooved things of beauty, Sebastian Professional hair lead Anthony Cole makes a calculated decision with his two main products, Sebastian Professional Texture Maker and Craft Clay (@sebastianpro_offi cial). "To build off of Christian's vision, I chose to work with products inspired by nature," he shares. But fi rst, he taps Mousse Forte to prime hair for a sleek blowout and then, after creating a deep side part, Cole draws the body-packed lengths into a low side ponytail. In need of grip to help with weaving the fi shtail, he sprays a hefty dose of Texture Maker through the tail and then gets to work. "After I'm done braiding, I warm up Craft Clay on my hands by blow-drying it, and then gently pull apart the fi shtail, giving it a 'windblown' look," he explains. Cole notes that though one's natural inclination may be to deconstruct the braid starting from the ends, he suggests beginning in the middle to "give yourself more control over opening up the braid." He surmises that the weathered effect this deconstruction begets mimics the way the repeated whipping of wind etches designs into rocks. If that weren't enough, Cole weaves in one fi nal element to echo the sparkling veins found threading through nature's most beautiful stones: shiny copper wire sourced from Home Depot. "We needed something fl exible, and this was it!" he laughs. For Anthony Cole's stunning fi shtail inspiration, he looks to rock formations whipped into magnifi cent shape by one of nature's best tools: wind. —KLF Tail Wind Hero Product Sebastian Professional Craft Clay provides grip to fi ngers, which helps deconstruct the fi shtail.
