38 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JULY 2017 L I V E & LE A R N Profi les THE GROWING GARDEN In 1967, Olivia Garden was started in Belgium by schoolteacher Jean Rennette and his wife Micheline, a hairdresser. They began manufacturing wigs and hairpieces, eventually expanding to liquid products, appliances and salon tools. By 1985, having conquered Europe, the family sought new heights in the States; nowadays, they have over 50 patents and a presence in more than 100 countries. What's next? Many things, including the continuation of the brand's trademark product innovation, plus developing a new educational team. My, how this garden has grown! COURTESY OF ANNE MAZA G rowing up in Belgium, Anne Maza relished the buzz at her family's offi ce, Olivia Garden (@oliviagardenint). At the age of 10, she watched her father dictate correspondence and instructions to his secretaries while they scribbled frenetic notes and knew she wanted to be involved. Maza soon taught herself typing and shorthand, and when her parents moved stateside to conquer a new market, the then 12-year-old started working for Olivia Garden as a secretary (her brother Pierre became the accountant). Working with typewriters and fax machines, Maza returned from school every day to transcribe her father's letters and instructions to customers, sales reps, suppliers and Belgian employees. Meanwhile, as Olivia Garden built its brand at hair shows around the country, the children remained in tow, learning fi rsthand about the industry while often traveling late at night to avoid missing school. "My parents inspired me through their passion for the industry, work ethic, courage and unwavering confi dence," Maza recalls. "They taught me to believe in myself and that there was no limit to what I could do." After pitching in throughout her teens, Maza attended UC Berkeley and spent summers cold-calling salons to sell hair curlers, eventually snagging a business administration degree with a double major in marketing and fi nance. The self-professed marketing junkie started full-time at Olivia Garden and never looked back; today, as VP of sales and marketing, she runs day-to-day operations with Pierre, overseeing marketing, product development, sales, trade shows and education. "Having built the business from the ground up with my parents and brother, I know and understand every aspect of every department, but my work ethic, determination, passion, positive energy and focus are some of my real assets," Maza muses. "I love the idea of working extremely hard to build a business and surrounding myself with others who share the same passion, work ethic and no-nonsense attitude." From 10-year-old secretary to head marketing honcho, Anne Maza has spent a lifetime helping to shape her family's iconic business, Olivia Garden.
