112 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JULY 2017 News Now this is what we call making a difference: Recently, the charitable organization Makeovers That Matter (MTM) held a special Invest in Vets event at the City Club in Los Angeles, providing attendees with the unique opportunity to support female veterans. The event was hosted by actress Brianne Howey and included inspiring speeches from Theodora Leon and Marqueta Oliver, two female veterans who shared their personal stories of how completing the MTM program helped shape them for success after returning from serving our nation. "I'm proud of the work we've been able to do over the last fi ve years," says Michael John Derricott, founder and president of MTM. "My vision is to be able to provide our services to an ever-expanding population of deserving women. I also see MTM deepening and expanding the level of services for these women thanks to the support of our sponsors [including John Paul Mitchell Systems]. Makeovers That Matter serves female veterans by providing free services such as hair, makeup, fashion styling and job interview training to help these women boost their confi dence and successfully re-enter the workplace." —KK Investing in Vets Makeovers That Matter founder Michael John Derricott and actress Brianne Howey TOP: COURTESY OF MAKEOVERS THAT MATTER; BOTTOM: COURTESY OF BELLUS ACADEMY Go for Gold Charitable efforts always make you feel like a winner, and that's especially true if you're recognized for your philanthropy. For its outstanding dedication to community service, Bellus Academy was presented with the Gold Award for Excellence in Community Service by the California Association of Private Post-Secondary Schools. This honor is huge for the academy and indicative of just how dedicated the school is to helping others. The stylists walked away with the highest level of community service recognition, and were chosen from a pool of private post-secondary colleges in California. The school participated in a total of 27 endeavors that have touched the lives of those in San Diego county over the last 12 months. These initiatives included pampering those affl icted with cancer, giving haircuts to homeless individuals, supporting a production with hair and makeup services (with proceeds benefi tting domestic violence victims), as well as lending talent to events targeting at-risk youth. This diverse range of efforts proves that beauty is truly beautiful. Andi Seaboch, Bellus Academy community relations manager, accepts the "Gold" Excellence in Community Service Award from Dr. Elaine Ikeda, executive director of California Campus.
