TIP #1: Become Business Savvy First, make sure that you're always adding on to a service. Many stylists see themselves as artists instead of business people, when really you should be both. There are so many add-on services that can take the client's experience to the next level as well as boost profi ts. Second, it's imperative that you educate your clients on the upkeep of the particular service they receive by pre-booking them. Third, you should always be marketing for new business. Clients move, get bored or simply change stylists—so you should always be cultivating new traffi c. I hear so many stylists say they aren't taking new clients. This is such a strange concept to me! I sometimes see up to 30 clients a day and gladly accept more. Why turn away money when people want to spend with you? TIP #2: Know Your Audience Social media is everything! I've seen many stylists and salons with large followings go out of business or have very few clients. It's all about your follower engagement and if your account is driving actual dollars into the salon. Your page should also refl ect who you are as a professional and the type of work you enjoy. For example, if you enjoy men's grooming, then your page should have a masculine feel that attracts a male audience. If you specialize in bold colors, post pictures of that and the inspiration behind them. Lastly, know who your audience is when using hashtags. Don't use just any hashtag, because not everyone is your client. TIP #3: Be Comfort-Free Being comfortable is not an option if you ever want to reach true success. As a stylist, you have to continuously move beyond your comfort zone. I constantly push myself to try new techniques and stay immersed in education. One of the saddest things to see is the lack of customer service in today's market. Never take clients for granted; they have a wide variety of other stylists and salons to choose from. TIP #4: Retail, Retail, Retail Your clients are using hair care products, but are they purchasing them from you? From my experience traveling to different salons, average retail sales are fairly dismal. There is a reason why clients shop in so many different places for hair care: We aren't doing our job well. Clients need and want testimonials on products; that's why they shop online. As a beauty professional, it's your job to recommend the products that best serve your clients. TIP #5: Build Trust Many of my clients let me choose to do what I think is best for their hair because there is a high level of trust and respect between us. They know that I am continuously furthering my education and honing my skills as a stylist. This is something that I feel great about as a professional—knowing my clients place their trust in my hands. 48 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JUNE 2017 Stylist and educator Daniel Mason-Jones shares tips and tricks for increasing clientele and profi t from his Make Money, Not Excuses class. —JASMINE COREAS Live & Learn/ Business Affairs No Excuses Do's for Increasing Revenue Make sure that each consultation is thorough and suggest solutions.
