CLOCKWISE FROM TOP, LEFT: TIMOTHY A. CLARY/AFP; VICTOR VIRGILE/GAMMA-RAPHO; PETER WHITE/GETTY IMAGES 30 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JUNE 2017 Trendsetters/ Runway Report T here's a craftiness to Rodarte's clothes: Gowns appear pieced together from various scraps of fabric. Upon closer inspection, however, there's nothing haphazard about what goes into each of these pieces; the price tags alone clue you in to that fact. This same piecemeal arts-and-crafts feel also fi nds a home in hair. Wella Professionals (@wellahair) lead Odile Gilbert captures the idea perfectly with tortoiseshell barrettes, dangling tulle and sequin fl owers, fi ttingly sourced from leftover scraps in the collection. "The idea is to do barrettes—you know, the straight kind—like kids would use in school," she says, noting that the trailing blossoms are knotted into each of the barrettes at random. "It's as if you're a kid in school and you're supposed to create something instead of buying it. It's very important to not think and just do. You grab some hair, cut a piece [of fabric], knot it and make it look a little rough," she explains. That "rough" appearance transfers to the hair, which while damp, Gilbert runs through with Enrich Moisturizing Conditioner, then twists in small sections as she diffuses. Hand-raking leaves hair rumpled and primed for frilly vines. For each model, "we're doing bangs or a middle or side part—it's individual to the girl," Gilbert says. Once the front is determined, a top section of hair is loosely gathered in the back and the barrette pinning begins. "We're mixing it into the hair, don't know where!" she laughs, noting that this aimless approach relays a more organic and childlike essence. Once the right amount of buds bloom, Gilbert passes EIMI Stay Essential Light Crafting Spray over the lengths. The style is beyond romantic—a signature of Gilbert's iconic approach to hair. Back Bloom Strands act as a trellis for falling fabric blossoms. Hero Product Wella Professionals Enrich Moisturizing Conditioner softens texture for daintier rumpling. Blooms Dangling fabric fl orets lend childlike beauty at Rodarte. —KLF of Youth
