ALL HAIL THE AIR-DRY. "Never go from soaking wet strands to blowdryer in hand," warns Joiful (@joifulapp) artist Micah Childers. "Don't touch that tool until hair is 75 percent or more dry, to minimize exposure to damaging heat." Instead, pros may use that time to analyze the texture and density of a client's scalp to set realistic expectations regarding achievable smoothness and volume levels. 48 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MAY 2017 COURTESY OF MANUFACTURERS; COURTESY OF JOIFUL Live & Learn/ Quick Tips The enduring popularity of blow-dry bars proves without question that style-starved mane mavens will go to tremendous lengths for a killer blowout. To achieve similar trendsetting results at home or in salons, we turned to three tress gurus for tips on how to best use this top thermal tool. —FM Blow Me Away AVOID OVERKILL. Work on hair in one-inch increments, moving down from roots to tips. "Don't pick up a giant chunk and try drying it all at once," advises celeb stylist Matt Adams from CURE Malibu. Ask yourself if the base is done before moving to the next section. While fl at iron work is great, it shouldn't be a frizz-smoothing fi x for a bad blowout due to lack of moisture. DESIGN WHILE DRYING. "Mold locks into desired shape while applying heat to every section, and design from the mirror's perspective, which is a client's reality," explains Joico (@joico) guest artistic director Vivienne Mackinder. Nix sculpting attempts post-blowout—at that point, it's too late. "And once hair is set, stop touching it!" instructs Childers. Oil from hands will lend unwanted weight to hair, affecting the style's look and longevity. ADD VOLUME. Dry crown sections plus fl at head areas, then backcomb roots and tease in texture. Conversely, those with curls should practice careful brushwork: Apply equal amounts tension and glide. "Too much of the former may make manes look straight, but they'll be unpleasantly rough to touch," notes Adams. GET GAGE-FRIENDLY. Dryer settings exist for a reason. "Opt for low heat and power when molding tresses into position, and save high power plus heat for fast-drying only," urges Mackinder. Finally, never underestimate the power of a cold shot to close down cuticles and impart lasting shine. — Joico stylists create fab fi nished looks. The correct tools help to craft perfect 'dos. TOOL TIME Boasting features like high-pressure airfl ow and direct ion technology that speed drying time by up to 50 percent while smoothing cuticles for shine sans frizz, today's blowdryers are ushering in the (hot) wave of the future.
