34 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MAY 2017 Trendsetters/ A-List TOP, LEFT: TARA ZIEMBA/WIREIMAGE; MATHEW IMAGING/WIREIMAGE (4) Special Recognition TOP HONORS The Lifetime Achievement Award— given to one makeup artist and one hairstylist for exceptional contributions to the motion picture arts and sciences—was given to Leonard Engelman [pictured above] this year for his superior makeup work (think Ghostbusters and Sleepless in Seattle) and tress guru Barbara Lorenz (When Harry Met Sally and X-Men). Y ou could call them the unsung heroes of the big screen. While actors soak up the spotlight and accolades from adoring fans, it's the talented men and women working behind cameras— hairdressers and makeup artists—who often craft some of the most iconic moments in movies, yet these victors typically receive little recognition. "No one is waiting at the door after a 16-hour day to present you with a golden statuette," laughs celebrity hairstylist Linda Flowers. "We do this work because we love it." Yet change may be afoot. Enter the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists (MUAHS) Guild Awards (@local_706), which is determined to give proper credit where it's due. (Established in 1999, the awards ran until 2003 before taking a 10-year hiatus, resuming again in 2013.) This year's gala took place on February 19 at The Novo by Microsoft venue in Los Angeles. A total of 23 categories honored artisans currently working in motion pictures, TV, music videos, commercials, theatrical productions and even at Disneyland theme parks. How are nominees chosen? "Every category has its own criteria determined by a select committee of Guild members," explains MUAHS president Sue Cabral- Ebert. Artist names are submitted and then voted on by more than 1,900 active Guild participants. The fi ve people who receive the most votes become nominees within each category. "These awards are presented to outstanding creators by their peers, which is the highest of all honors," says Cabral-Ebert. "Stylists and makeup artists toiling away in the entertainment fi eld previously received little recognition for their exceptional abilities, which contribute greatly to the storytelling process." Yet implications are far-reaching. "The Guild awards are important for everyone in the beauty industry, because they elevate all mane and maquillage masters to a greater standard of excellence," notes Flowers, who is also a former MUAHS winner. "And the more superior our skills, the more we all profi t, as that raised bar becomes the new industry norm."
