ANDREEA ANGELESCU(5); ASHLEY WILLIAMS: MATTEO VALLE/IMAXTREE.COM 32 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MAY 2017 Trendsetters/ Runway Report The spring/summer 2017 season is shaping up to be a Technicolor dream for adventurous types. —KLF R emember when sought- after hair color fell into a few categories: red, black, brown and blonde? Those days are well behind us; scroll through any hair-centric Instagram feed (you can start with ours: @beautylaunchpad) and image after image of colorists' pigment creativity reveals off-the- charts designs that are truly works of art. Historically, such hair color experimentation doesn't typically reach the runways; after all, these girls need to make a living and a quirky-colored mop could limit their job prospects. (Sad, but true.) That is, until the spring/summer 2017 season struck, and daringly dyed hair put a pack of models a head above the rest. The leader of said pack, the pink- fringed Fernanda Hin Lin Ly, walked a total of 20 shows this season—a feat for any model, let alone one whose comp card lists her hair color as "other." And unlike some models who fl irt with a pastel ombré here or a vibrant streak there, only to return to their roots moments later, Ly came onto the scene years ago with blushed strands and hasn't been asked to change her pigment choice since—and, therefore, hasn't. While pastel pink in a variety of intensities played out on various styles, from buzz cuts at N°21 to painted mid-lengths at Max Mara, a surprising runner-up for most booked, off-book color was orange. Blindingly vibrant (Fendi and Max Mara) or tempered with lowlights (Proenza Schouler), the unexpected hue offers an alternative to those looking to nix what has now become expected (read: pink, baby blue and gray). And if pink, orange or any pigment from the upside down of haircolor doesn't hold favor, your adventurous clients may enjoy interesting haircolor placement—say, a split-screen color block, like the platinum-meets-blonde seen at Ashley Williams. One thing is for sure: Bearing the label "other" is truly a badge of honor when it comes to hair color. OTHERS THE Leader of the pink pack: model Fernanda Hin Lin Ly!
