42 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MARCH 2017 I can honestly say that I still love doing hair after 28 years. They say hairstylists are some of the happiest people, career- wise. I believe it; I think you hold a charmed life when you can do what you love." Moroccanoil artistic director Kevin Hughes chats with senior editor Angie Reiber about inspiration, goals and the Golden Rule. The Creative Kind Trendsetters/ Mood Board TOP, RIGHT: GETTY IMAGES; COURTESY OF MOROCCANOIL (5) FAMILY WAY My family is my No. 1 infl uence. I am the 11th of 12 children. We were so blessed with the most kind and compassionate parents. They reminded me all the time about what is important in this world: family, and treating others the way you would like to be treated. HOOT STUFF Nature simply amazes me. For instance, I just saw a video about exotic owls and it blew my mind—the intense colors and patterns on these beautiful creatures! They are so unusual, not what we would think of as typical beauty, and yet they are perfect. It reminds me to think outside the box. A MATTER OF COURSE I always wanted to style hair for celebrities on the red carpet, and to have my name printed in a major magazine and in the credits of a movie. I am very fortunate to say I've achieved the fi rst two, and I still hope to someday have my name in a major motion picture. But my career took a different path when I started working with Moroccanoil as an educator to other stylists—and that has created some of the most fulfi lling moments. INSPIRATION POINT It can be frustrating when people want you to be creative on demand; unfortunately that is not how I operate. The creative process takes time for me. I am a very visual person, as I think most artists are. When something makes me stop in my tracks, I note what drew me to it, dissect it, and look at it very closely to determine what appealed to me. MANE MUST-HAVES I couldn't live without Moroccanoil Treatment because it not only helps you blow out the hair so easily, but it doubles as a treatment. And I have fallen in love with our Dry Texture Spray. It gives instant texture and volume that stays, which is so important when you are working with thin or slippery hair. L.A. STORY I live in Los Angeles, where I am fortunate to be surrounded by creative minds. I have some really talented friends with whom I love to work on projects. It gives me the ability to get inspired and do research to fi nd things that get us excited, or to do something really outlandish— sometimes that becomes art, and sometimes it's a lesson on what not to do. Hughes' smokin' styling! Red-hot ringlets in Elle Russia. KEVIN HUGHES KIND REGARDS My mentor when I fi rst started was Dawn Coppertino. She was an inspiration to me before I ever met her—it took months to get an appointment with her! While in cosmetology school, I assisted her part-time to see what made her so popular. It turns out she treated people kindly and with respect, as well as being an amazing hairstylist. She thanked me every time I swept hair for her. She also told me if you just keep an open mind, you'll never stop growing. These are life lessons that have stayed with me to this day. most fulfi lling moments.
