MARCH 2017 | beautylaunchpad.com | 113 When brunette celebrity role models like Katy Perry and Selena Gomez experiment with unconventional colors, Latina women take notice. As a result, more and more are requesting shades of blue, violet, rose, etc.— either as an allover effect or as accent pieces. Here are some of my tips for creating "cool- girl" shades for these clients. Keep it cool. Latina women don't typically like warmth in their haircolor, so even when working with unconventional palettes, lean toward cool shades like blue, violet, smoke gray and berry. One shade I'm using quite a bit right now is Moss Green from the Matrix Color Sync Watercolors collection. At fi rst people are apprehensive about green, but this shade is a beautiful, lived-in, khaki-toned version that suits a wide range of skin tones from dark to light. What's more, because Watercolors are demipermanents with CeraOil technology, they last much longer than the 12 shampoos expected from semipermanents, and they keep the hair in good condition. Lighten with care. Most progressive, fun colors require pre-lightening, but if you're doing a blue or violet or berry, you don't have to lift as much as you would if you wanted a light gray or blonde result. However, it's important to always assess the integrity of the hair before doing any lifting. I recommend strand testing— that way you can guarantee the hair is strong enough for lightening, and also give your client a peek at the fi nished result. Use "bond" insurance. Latinas often color their hair frequently. Adding a bond-building formula like Matrix Ultim8 to every step— lightening, demipermanent deposit, post color—will prevent breakage and keep hair strong over time. Have the care conversation. Client satisfaction will be greater if her color lasts and her hair remains healthy. So I talk to my color clients about a few important things regarding home care. I tell them to turn down the temperature in the shower because hot water strips away color more quickly—as do thermal tools, so I recommend setting irons no higher than 300 to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. I'm also adamant about using high quality shampoos and conditioners, along with frequent deep conditioning masks like Biolage R.A.W. Re-Hab Clay Mask. It's as effective as an in-salon treatment for tending to stressed, sensitized hair and rebuilding strength. FLYING COLORS Robert Santana, Matrix artistic director and Latin Expressions team leader, shares color know-how for tending to your Latina clients.
