Editor's Notebook You never know how the people you meet might impact your lifeā€”or you, theirs. Connecting Flight ARMANDO SANCHEZ; AMY DODDS s I've mentioned in previous Editor's Notebooks, I'm not the best fl yer. And when I'm nervous, I tend to fall into journalist mode: I ask questions. I must say, though, this tendency has served me well. I've met rock climbers, orthopedic surgeons, world travelers and businesspeople. But one recent example stands out: On my fl ight to Cancun for the Farouk Conference last September, I was seated next to a lovely lady, Kim M. Ferry, who just happens to be the Department Head of Hair for Pretty Little Liars. We gabbed the entire fi ve- hour fl ight, and I enjoyed her company so much that I didn't move from the middle seat to the aisle when it became apparent no one was going to sit there. You can read more about Ferry on page 72 in A-List, where she dishes on how she got into the showbiz industry and shares some insider secrets. This is why I envy you, the stylist. You have the opportunity to meet and speak with new people practically every day. You get to hear their joys and sorrows, their likes and dislikes. And this time of year, you get to help men and women prepare for their best day ever! Whether it's for a prom or a wedding or even a date night, your clients will fondly recall these occasions, and you getting them ready will be part of it. We've rounded up some of our favorite red carpet looks from this year's awards season to help you prepare, starting on page 96. I can only imagine the conversations they will spark! AMY DODDS, Executive Editor adodds@creativeage.com 18 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MAY 2016 NON-FREQUENT FLYER On my recent fl ight to Matrix Destination in Orlando, Florida, I was fortunate enough to be seated next to a young stylist, Krystal Negrete, on her fi rst-ever fl ight. She works at jcp Salon in Bakersfi eld, California, and was one of several lucky stylists who, by selling a certain amount of Matrix product, won a contest that sent them to receive three days of top-notch instruction. I happened to see her a day into the event, and she was over the moon. Here she is, holding a mannequin head she'd just snipped during Nicholas French's class.
