32 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | APRIL 2016 S tylists strive to make their clients beautiful, but where would we be without an equally radiant planet? This was the question entrepreneur Shane Price asked himself in 2009 when founding Green Circle Salons (ontario.greencirclesalons.ca), a Toronto-based organization dedicated to advancing eco-conscious beauty initiatives. The harsh truth is that salons generate a lot of trash. Those committed to combatting its harmful disposal can partner with the group by setting aside hair clippings, foils, residual dyes, chemicals, paper, plastic, aerosol cans and old equipment, including dryers and fl at irons. "I believe green is the new black," quips Meleesa Ferris, Owner of Green Circle-certifi ed Meleesa The Salon in Huntington Beach, California. "We now recycle 120 pounds of garbage from our small 750-square-foot space each month." Specially labeled Green Circle boxes make it simple to sort and package such items, which are fetched by company reps via one of two methods: regular truck pickup for those within geographical proximity, or the "hair mail" UPS program servicing more distant locations. All materials are processed at a windmill-powered warehouse. "We take it from zero to hero overnight, with an 85- to 95-percent waste-diversion policy that instantly eliminates the occurrence of trash-tossing and drain-fl ushing," Price explains. Apart from pleasing Mother Earth, participating members benefi t by ensuring their salons continue to be sustainable. Each one charges an "environmental stewardship fee" of $1-$2 per client visit. "A portion goes to running our programs, and the remainder stays with facilities for reinvesting in technology like LED lighting, Energy Star-rated appliances or solar panels, which make businesses more sustainable," says Price. Marketing is likewise supported. An ever- growing green directory allows consumers to search for environmentally friendly chop shops in their area, online or with an app called My Green Salon. Currently, the organization is closing in on 1,000 affi liates. "My goal this year is to double that number, and create a sustainable North American beauty industry by 2020," enthuses Price. RECYCLE. Combat landfi ll footprints by properly disposing of paper, plastic and glass, or bringing items home if residential recycling is the only option. REDUCE WATER WASTE. Low-fl ow faucet fi xtures can eliminate up to 60 percent of H 2 O loss, while still maintaining the shampoo-station pressure clients love. SWAP LIGHTS. Switch from halogens that suck energy (and money!) to LEDs. RETHINK TRANSPORTATION. Encourage staff to opt for public transportation if available, or create a carpool system. WORK WITH NATURE. Tint windows to reduce AC usage in summer, and properly insulate against cold winter drafts .
