16 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | DECEMBER 2015 Editor's Notebook The industry lost Don Bewley, one of the greats, back in October. In Memoriam ARMANDO SANCHEZ T ypically, this column in December lauds the Readers Choice Awards winners, which are picked by you as the best products in the industry. Well, this time around, I'll be celebrating another great: Eufora Cofounder Don Bewley. I had the opportunity to meet Don on several occasions, but the most notable was when we went down to his offi ces in Carlsbad, California, for a video interview to accompany "Power Play," a feature in the July 2014 issue. He and his wife and partner, Beth Bewley, spoke about their inauspicious meeting—it was the height of the spiral-perm craze in the '80s, and Don walked right up to Beth on a crowded dance fl oor and started to restyle her hair. "I couldn't believe his nerve!" she exclaimed. "But I knew your hair would look so much better if I styled it!" Don rejoined. "And as a hairstylist, I knew that trend was going away." You could feel the affection the two had for each other, which made them so successful both in love and in business. Nearly 20 years ago, after Don had received a job offer, the pair packed their kids and pets into a car and drove from Ohio to the sunny shores of California. Not long after, they were forced to make a decision: leave back to the Midwest, or stay put and "make a go of it," said Beth. They obviously opted for the latter: "I always tell people, ' Naivety is a really good thing!'" explained Beth. "Because sometimes it's better not to know, or you'd never dive in." They started Eufora and sold locally in San Diego—"I was the salesperson!" Don laughed. Paired with good business contacts and a winning product, the pair celebrated successes and fi xed mistakes along the way. "It's been quite an experience," Beth said. And Don agreed: "What a journey." AMY DODDS, Executive Editor adodds@creativeage.com Beth and Don Bewley photographed in the Eufora offi ces, May 2014, by Launchpad photographer Armando Sanchez. The hair is left with outstanding shine and the Color Personalities add an element of fun to the whole experience." —Oscar Giovanni Owner Oscar Giovanni Salon Salon & Spa, OH I am... Myster y At The Palazzo ® "Fellow salon owners ask me all the time why we chose Aloxxi above all the other brands that have courted us. My answer is simple. One, Aloxxi guest artists and education are inspiring and teach us fresh, current techniques. Two, the color results are true to the swatch every single time. Three, the condition of the hair after a color service always feels great and looks gorgeous -- and the color lasts!" —Ceron Owner Ceron Hair Studio, Houston, TX I am... Espresso Y ourself !
